CMJ Part Two: Iconic Songs Panel & A Lotta Vince Vaughn
For anyone who didn’t see my previous post, I’ve been busy all week long with the CMJ Music Marathon in NYC. To fill you in on what CMJ is, it’s a giant indie music festival that takes place throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn over the course of 5-days, showcasing indie & unsigned artists/bands, upcoming films, and offers a ton of different panels on the different aspects of the music industry. [Think Comic Con for independent music fans.]
Like any good employee of the indie music industry, I’ve spent a good 14 hours a day of the last 5 days attending the festival and I am exhausted. Now that I have a few minutes to breathe, I’m playing catch up and have decided to dedicate a few posts to what I’ve been up to.
Sooo here’s part two, after the jump:
On Thursday, I attended a panel on Iconic Songs. Four panelists - Rick Carnes (President of the Songwriters’ Guild), Mele Mel (Grandmaster Flash), Robert Christgau (Moderater), and Erin Davis (son of Miles) - each picked a song that they deemed to be an iconic song that influenced a generation. Carnes picked the 30’s tune, “Brother Can You Spare a Dime?,” Mele Mel picked his own “The Messenger,” Christgau picked “Jump” (yes, the Cris Cross song, go figure…), and Davis picked his dad’s “So What”. Here’s a pic from the panel:
Yesterday, I spent a great afternoon at a special screening of Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show, which opens in theatres on February 8, 2008 (more commonly known as my 24th birthday). Vince and star Justin Long were in attendence and did a Q&A afterwards. The movie is a documentary of a 30-day, 30-city, 30-show comedy tour that Vince took four comics on during the summer of 2005. It’s hilarious. Here’s a picture from the Q&A afterwards:
Part Three coming up soon…
