Celebrities Weigh in On Ex-Governor Spitzer’s Prostitution Scandal

by Colleen on March 12th, 2008

It’s been a whirlwind few days here in New York.  Our governor, Elliot Spitzer, the former golden boy long-hailed for his tough stance on crime, was caught participating in a prostitution ring as “Client 9.”  Democrat Spitzer was our former Attorney General and many celebrities campaigned for him, saying that he was what New York needed to get back on track.  Here’s some of what celebrities had to say or joke about it:

“A f*cking embarrassment.  I’m really pissed.  I honestly don’t care where or how people have sex, or with whom, but prostitution is illegal. For someone whose got such a reputation for having a real attitude towards crime, you have to walk the walk. I’m sorry.”  -Julianne Moore

Other celebrity reactions:

  • “I sat next to the guy three times and I didn’t pick up on any of this, and I usually have excellent whore-dar.” -Stephen Colbert
  • “They’re talking about impeaching Elliot Spitzer if he doesn’t step down and I’m thinking, ‘Whoa, a Democrat being impeached for extramarital sex. Well, happy days are here again!’ ” -David Letterman
  • “Not surprisingly, clients 1 through 8 were Charlie Sheen.” -Conan O’Brien
  • “Aren’t you sick of men? Viagra is destroying our government.” -Joy Behar

While I definitely feel that there has been a bit of an overreaction against Spitzer, this is a major disappointment. His political career was definitely permanently crippled, but he was a good AG and governor. Sad to see that go to waste, what a major mistake on his part…

BC must have a lot of compassion for bullies.

The governor was an arrogant bully who felt that he was above the law.

And thus ends another career. No tears here.

But somehow GWB and Dick Cheney are not “bullies” who feel they are above the law? Piss off with your witch hunt.

Spitzer may have been an arrogant jerk, but he brought some MUCH needed aggressiveness in policing Wall St. You really think lap dogs like Harvey Pitt were getting the job done? Who cares if it was opportunism, it needed to get done.

I don’t condone what he Spitzer did at all, it is shameful. But plenty of politicians have survived far worse than a night with a prostitute. Show me a single politician who is without dirt or not hypocritical and I will show you a bridge I need to sell.

Plenty of people overlooked similar transgressions by Rudy, too. It swings both ways, buddy.

I’m not really sure how I was trolling. I made a legit comment to kick things off and tried to inject substance into both of my following replies.

That said- back on topic. I’m still disappointed about the Spitzer deal. Just as much as his tryst showed his flaws, so did the manner in which he so quickly tucked his tail between his legs and resigned.
